YJ Pocket Cube mini 4x4 (56mm)

YJ Pocket Cube mini 4x4 (56mm)

This magnetic 4x4 cube from YJ measures 56 mm, the same as a typical speedcubing 3x3. Most speedcubing 4x4s are noticeably bigger, so this model feels completely different in your hand. The Pocket Cube mini 4x4 has the same EAN code as the earlier YJ ZhiLong Mini 4x4 M, which was previously sold as the ZhiSu M 4x4. It is the same cube, just under a new name. It weighs 96 g and comes in a stickerless bright colour scheme.

How the YJ mini 4x4 turns

Turning is fast, with a distinctly crunchy feel. This cube is not very smooth. YJ used stronger magnets in the inner layers and weaker ones in the outer layers. This helps slices snap into place more easily during centre reduction and edge pairing, while outer layer moves stay light. Users compare the feel to the smaller YJ MGC 4x4 with similar corner cutting. Some, however, find the magnets in the middle layers a little too strong.

There are two things to keep in mind. Out of the box the cube can be dry, so lubing it usually improves its performance noticeably. On a loose setting it may also pop. A slight increase in tension usually helps, and reviews suggest the cube also works well with tighter tensioning.

Who is a small 4x4 cube for?

• For people with smaller hands and for kids who simply find a large 4x4 uncomfortable.
• For cubers who like smaller cubes and want a 4x4 the size of the 3x3 they usually solve.
• As a cube for your bag or backpack. It fits where a regular 4x4 would take up too much space.
• As an affordable magnetic 4x4 for your first try at bigger cubes or as a second practice cube.

The smaller size comes at a price, too. The pieces are smaller, so with large hands it is easier to make finger mistakes. If you solve 4x4 for time and are used to the standard size, you will need a moment to adjust.
