Calvins Puzzle is a Hong Kong manufacturer making puzzles outside of WCA events: shape mods, cuboids, the Double Cube series and world map cubes. It also mass-produces designs by creators such as Tony Fisher, Evgeniy Grigoriev, Traiphum and Okamoto. A great choice for collectors and cubers who want something different from a standard 3x3.
The Calvins Puzzle brand (originally Calvin's Puzzle) is run by Calvin Fan from Hong Kong. The manufacturer doesn't compete with GAN or MoYu in speedcubing. Instead, it makes puzzles outside of WCA events: shape mods, cuboids, bandaged cubes and unusual shapes. Many of these models aren't offered by any other manufacturer, which is why the Calvin's name shows up so often in twisty puzzle collections.
A large part of the catalogue consists of designs by independent creators that, without mass production, would probably exist only as one-off pieces. Calvin works with Tony Fisher, Evgeniy Grigoriev, Traiphum Prungtaengkit and Japanese designers from the Okamoto family, among others. That's why many product names include the designers' names: Traiphum Megaminx Ball, Evgeniy Icosahedron, Fisher Wall Cube II, Okamoto Latch Cube, or the 3x3x5 Cross-Cube with Tony Fisher's and Evgeniy's logo. The collaboration with Evgeniy goes back to at least 2012, when a pillow-shaped version of the Dino Cube was released.
Many models come in several versions: with stickers, stickerless or in metallic colours, and some are released as limited editions.
This range is mainly for collectors and cubers who can already solve a 3x3 and are looking for a new challenge. Calvin's cubes aren't made for breaking records. What matters is their unusual mechanism and the process of finding the solution, not TPS. Some models need to be lubed and broken in before they turn smoothly. The easiest place to start is the world map cubes, as they work like a classic 3x3 or 4x4. Bandaged puzzles, cuboids and the Okamoto Latch Cube are best left for later. As a gift for a child, the brand is a good choice once the child can already solve a regular cube.
