DaYan Bermuda Cylindric, also known as the Bermuda Column, is a puzzle from the DaYan Bermuda series. It looks like a cylinder with an octagonal base, but inside it works like a 3x3: it has the same axis layout and turns in layers just like a regular cube. The difference is that one face is partially blocked (bandaged), so not every move can be made on it. This makes solving it feel different from a classic cube.

What the Bermuda series is about

The Bermuda series consists of twelve puzzles based on the 3x3. Eight of them are named after planets (from Mercury to Neptune) and form a cube shape when solved. The other four are additional shape mods: the Column (the Cylindric described here), the Star and two House models. In the planets, the triangular pieces are on several faces, while in the shape mods they are on only one. That makes the Cylindric a good entry point into the whole series.

How to solve it

After a few moves the cylinder loses its shape, so you need to follow the colors rather than the shape. The key skill is working around the bandaged face. 3x3 algorithms will only partly help you, because some of them require a move that the bandaging doesn't allow. You'll need to rearrange them or come up with your own solution. If you know the layer-by-layer method and have solved a few shape mods, you'll solve the Cylindric without much trouble. For a complete beginner, it's better as a second or third puzzle than a first one.

This is a puzzle for fun and for your collection, not a cube for setting times. It has no magnets or tension adjustment system like those found in modern 3x3 speed cubes.
