DaYan Bermuda Red House

DaYan Bermuda Red House is a house-shaped puzzle with a red roof, built on a 3x3 mechanism. It belongs to the Bermuda series, released by DaYan in 2011. In this series some pieces are permanently joined (bandaged), so each model calls for a slightly different approach than a regular 3x3 cube. On one face, a triangular piece replaces the usual center. It restricts some moves, so not every turn is possible at any given moment.

How it solves

The roof turns the cube into a shape mod. After a few moves the house loses its shape, and you also have to keep track of the orientation of the roof pieces. On top of that comes the blocking caused by the triangle, so before each move you need to check whether the layer can turn at all. Some 3x3 algorithms will still come in handy, but solving looks different here than on a regular cube.

According to users on cubing forums, the red house is easier than the green-roof version. A block-building approach in the style of the Petrus method also works well here. Even so, this puzzle is for someone who can already solve a 3x3 and wants to try something different. It is not suitable as a first cube.

Red House vs. other Bermuda models

The Bermuda series has two parts. The core set is 8 cubes named after planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune). On top of that there are 4 special versions with different shapes: Star, Column and two houses. The houses differ in roof color and difficulty. In many catalogs the red house is listed as House II, and the green-roof house as House I. When comparing offers, look at the roof color, not just the number.

Who is it for?

For those who can solve a 3x3 and want to try a puzzle with move restrictions, but without a big jump in difficulty. The Red House is also a great pick for collectors of the Bermuda series or unusual shape mods. It is a puzzle to solve for fun and is not an official WCA event.
