DaYan Bermuda Sunflower

DaYan Bermuda Sunflower is a 3x3 shape mod from the Bermuda series. Some shops also sell it as Star or Star Column. When solved, the puzzle is a prism whose base is an eight-pointed star. Inside is a mechanism similar to a 3x3, but on one face some of the pieces are bandaged, meaning they are joined into a triangular block. This block restricts the moves and sets the Sunflower apart from an ordinary shape mod.

The Bermuda series at a glance

The DaYan Bermuda series includes twelve puzzles. Eight of them are named after planets and form a cube when solved. The four additional models (Star, Column and two House variants) are shape mods with a triangular bandage on one face only. The Sunflower belongs to this second group.

How to solve it

If you can solve a regular 3x3 cube, you have a good starting point. You do, however, need to keep track of two things at once: the shape of the puzzle and which moves the bandaged block prevents. The centres on the side faces are oriented, so matching the colours is not enough. Each centre also has to be turned the right way. In terms of difficulty, it sits at about a medium level within the Bermuda series.

According to user reviews, the puzzle turns smoothly and has decent corner cutting. However, if you try to cut a corner, the small corner pieces may pop. Popped pieces are easy to put back in. Lockups occur mainly when you try to make a move that the bandage does not allow. This is not a cube for setting times, but a puzzle to figure out at a relaxed pace.

Who is it for?

For those who have already mastered the 3x3 and want to try something other than yet another speed cube. It also fits nicely into a collection alongside other Bermuda models. It is not a good choice as a child's first cube, because without knowing how to solve a 3x3 it is hard to even get started.
