DaYan Bermuda Uranus

DaYan Bermuda Uranus is one of the eight puzzles in the Bermuda series, released by DaYan in 2011. Each model in the series is named after a planet. All of them are based on the 3x3 cube mechanism, but some faces have large triangular centers instead of the usual square ones. Uranus has triangular centers on four faces, and only two adjacent faces keep the classic square centers. This means Uranus has more triangles than most models in the series.

How the Bermuda Uranus works

A triangular center extends into the outer layers of the neighboring faces. Because of this, in any given position some faces are blocked and cannot be turned. Faces with triangles can be turned by 45 degrees. This changes the shape of the cube and unlocks other moves. Once scrambled, Uranus no longer looks like a cube, so restoring its shape is part of the challenge.

Solving methods you know from the 3x3 are only partly useful here. Most of the time goes into finding sequences you can perform despite the blocked faces. Cubers who collect the whole series often name Uranus and Neptune as the hardest of the eight planets, because they have the most triangular centers.

Uranus vs. other Bermuda models

The models in the series differ in the number and placement of triangular faces. Mercury has just one triangle and is solved almost like a regular 3x3, avoiding the blocked moves. Neptune has triangles on three adjacent faces. Uranus adds a fourth triangle. If you are just starting out with the Bermuda series, you may want to begin with a simpler model and pick up Uranus later.

Who is it for?

For people who solve the 3x3 comfortably and are looking for a puzzle that makes you work things out on your own rather than memorize algorithms. Uranus also fits well in a collection alongside other models from the series or other bandaged and shape mod puzzles. This is not a speedcubing cube, nor a good choice as a child's first cube. Some users lube their Bermuda puzzles straight out of the box to make them turn more smoothly.
