DaYan Bermuda Earth is a 3x3-based puzzle from the Bermuda series. It has three regular faces, two with large triangles and one Fisher-type face, so some layers lock up during turns. It is one of the easier cubes in the series and a good start for anyone who can already solve a 3x3. Size approx. 57 mm, black body.
DaYan Bermuda Earth is a puzzle based on the 3x3 cube. However, several of its faces have triangular pieces that block some layers from turning in certain positions. This is called bandaging: some pieces are joined together. Earth belongs to the Bermuda series, released by DaYan in 2011. The series includes eight cubes named after the planets of the Solar System: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There are also a few special versions with a changed shape (shape mods). When solved, Earth looks like an ordinary cube.
The Bermuda series uses four types of faces: a regular 3x3 face, a face with a small triangle, a face with a large triangle and a Fisher-type face. In the Earth version, three faces are regular, two have large triangles and one is Fisher-type. The cube's look and difficulty depend mainly on the large triangles. Because of them, not every layer can be turned at any moment.
The basic principle is the same as with a 3x3 cube. The difference is that before you turn a blocked layer, you first have to position the other layers so the triangles don't block it. People who have solved this cube say most of it can be solved intuitively. The last layer is usually the hardest part. Familiar 3x3 algorithms come in handy here, but you need to adapt them with setup moves, i.e. preparatory moves that get around the bandaging.
Compared with the rest of the series, Earth is considered one of the easier versions, along with Mercury and Venus. According to users, Jupiter and Uranus are among the harder ones.
For anyone who can already solve a 3x3 and wants to try a puzzle that requires independent thinking, not just executing algorithms. Earth is a good place to start the Bermuda series. It will also appeal to collectors completing all the planets. This is not a cube for timed speedcubing or for learning to solve for the first time.
