DaYan Bermuda Green House

DaYan Bermuda Green House is a shape-shifting puzzle from the Bermuda series. The series was designed by Daqing Bao and released by DaYan in 2011. The puzzle is shaped like a small house with a green roof and is one of the two "houses" in the series. The other one is the Red House with a red roof. The mechanism is based on a 3x3 cube, but some pieces are permanently joined (bandaged), so not every move from a classic 3x3 is possible in every state.

What is the Bermuda series

For the Bermuda puzzles, DaYan took well-known 3x3 shape mods and bandaged selected pieces together. As a result, some faces can only turn when the puzzle is in the right state. The first release of the series included eight cubes named after the planets of the Solar System. All of them are cube-shaped when solved and only change shape while scrambling. Alongside them, DaYan released four models that are not cubes even when solved: Bermuda Column, Bermuda Star and two Bermuda Houses. The Green House is one of these four.

How to solve it

Classic 3x3 methods don't carry over directly. 3x3 algorithms are useful as a starting point, but the move restrictions and the house shape force you to look for different sequences. After a few moves the puzzle no longer looks like a house, so you have to keep track of the shape as well as the colors. It's a puzzle for calm figuring out, not for setting fast times.

Who is it for?

The Green House is for people who can already solve a 3x3 and want to try something different, as well as for collectors of the Bermuda series and shape-shifting puzzles. We don't recommend it as a first cube: someone who doesn't know the 3x3 basics yet will probably get discouraged quickly. It makes a great gift for someone who already has a few cubes on the shelf.
