DianSheng – puzzle cubes and twisty puzzles with unusual shapes

DianSheng (full name: Shantou Chenghai Diansheng Toys Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese manufacturer from Shantou that has been operating since 2009. The company is best known for puzzles with irregular shapes. DianSheng often releases puzzle types that weren't available on the market before or that existed only as handmade mods. Long-time cubers will also remember the DianSheng Type-E. This light, loose-turning 3x3 cube was once a popular choice for one-handed solving.

Shape mods and unusual puzzles

These make up the largest part of the manufacturer's range. Most of these models work like a 3x3 or 4x4 but have a changed shape or unusual turning axes. After a few moves, the puzzle loses its shape, so you need to track the pieces differently than on a regular cube. This group includes, among others:

• the corner-only series, i.e. hexagonal dipyramids in 4-corner, 6-corner and 8-corner versions (the 8-corner works like a 4x4),


• Blade, Case Cube, Shield, Diamond Cube and UFO cube,


• two-layer puzzles such as the two-layer SQ1 and the 2-layer cylinder.

DianSheng shape mods are mainly bought for collections and as a new challenge rather than for very fast solving. Some models can have lockups, so it's better to turn them calmly.

Galaxy – magnetic FTO and Kilominx

The Galaxy series introduced the first mass-produced magnetic FTO (Face Turning Octahedron). Later came the Galaxy FTO NEO, which, in addition to magnets in the pieces, also has a Ball-Core, i.e. magnets in the core that stabilize the layers. The series also includes a magnetic Kilominx. These models are more often chosen by people who practice these events, not just by puzzle collectors.

NxN cubes: Solar and MS3X

The Solar series covers magnetic cubes from 2x2 to 7x7. These are affordable models with medium-strength magnets, often chosen as a first magnetic cube in a given size or to complete a collection. The manufacturer's flagship 3x3 is the MS3X, which was created under the MsCUBE brand. DianSheng took over this brand in 2022. The MS3X lets you adjust tension and compression, and the magnets in the centers and corner feet repel each other halfway through a turn, giving an effect similar to MagLev. It's a cube for people who want to fine-tune the setup themselves rather than use the cube straight out of the box.
