Picube AoFu V5 SE Matte 7x7

This special edition 7x7 cube was created by PiCube in collaboration with MoYu. It is based on the MoYu AoFu V5, MoYu's current flagship 7x7. However, the Picube AoFu V5 SE Matte is more than just new packaging. PiCube changed the edge-corner magnet layout and fitted its own springs, so the cube is set up differently right out of the box. This version has a matte surface without UV coating and comes in the stickerless bright colour scheme.

How the SE edition differs from the regular AoFu V5

The standard AoFu V5 comes in Single-Track, Double-Track and Triple-Track versions, which differ in the number and layout of magnets. The SE version from PiCube uses the same mechanism, but with differently selected edge and corner magnets and different springs. According to PiCube, this gives a more distinct yet controlled turning feel. The cube also has a blue PiCube logo and comes in a special edition box.

How it turns

The AoFu V5 series has a reputation for light, fast outer layers and a low tendency to pop. This matters on a 7x7, where fast turning can easily make the cube fall apart. These opinions, however, refer to the standard V5. The SE version has different magnets and springs, so the feel may be slightly different. The matte plastic offers medium grip. Some users note that a new cube is fairly slippery at first and needs a few dozen solves before the surface breaks in.

Matte or UV?

The SE edition is also available with a UV coating. The mechanism is the same; the difference is the surface. The Matte version is matte, doesn't shine and picks up fewer fingerprints. The UV version has a glossy coating that grips the fingers more. If you prefer classic matte MoYu plastic, choose the Matte version.

Who is it for?

For a cuber who regularly solves 7x7 and wants an AoFu V5 factory-tuned by PiCube, without having to experiment with magnets and springs on their own. For your first 7x7, while you are still learning the method, the standard AoFu V5 or a cheaper magnetic model will be more than enough.
