A speedcubing timer measures your time the same way it's done at competitions. You place your hands on two touch pads, and the timer starts when you lift them. It stops when you put them back down after solving the cube. Cheap training timers and competition timers work on the same principle. They differ mainly in compliance with the regulations, storing results and connectivity with your phone.
WCA competitions use StackMat timers made by Speed Stacks. Generations 3, 4 and 5 are allowed. The G5 model has two modes: 2-pad and 4-pad. Under WCA regulations, it may only be used in 2-pad mode. We offer it in two sets: G5 timer with a bag or G5 timer with a G5 mat and a bag. This set is usually chosen by cubers who want to train on the same equipment they'll see at competitions. It's also useful for organizers of local tournaments and clubs.
For everyday practice, a simple timer is all you need. This is where the choice is widest: QiYi SpeedCubing Timer, MoYu Timer and MoYu Timer V2, YJ SpeedCubing Timer, successive versions of the SengSo Timer (from the first one up to V4), Diansheng Timer in Mold A and Mold B versions, Z-Timer, as well as collector's editions such as the QiYi Aurora Timer Limited Edition or the QiYi Timer from the Mythical series. The models differ in their housing, touch pad sensitivity and how many recent results they remember. For beginners it's a good start, as it teaches you to start and stop the timer correctly.
Smart timers connect via Bluetooth to an app on your phone and save your results automatically. You don't have to copy them by hand, and your statistics are always at your fingertips. This group includes, among others, the QiYi Smart Timer, QiYi Smart Timer XuanWu, MoYu AI Timer, Zeal Smart Timer and GAN Halo Smart Timer. A good example is the GAN Halo Smart Timer: it connects to the app, saves results in the cloud and stores up to 10,000 solves in its memory. It also calculates the average of five solves and has protection against accidentally stopping the timer.
If you write down your results in a notebook or in a computer program, you don't need a smart timer. However, it will be appreciated by cubers who train a lot and analyze their progress.
The YJ Pocket Timer and SengSo One-handed mini Timer are smaller than standard models, so they're easy to take with you when traveling or to school. The SengSo version is designed for one-handed solving. When choosing a timer, it's a good idea to think about a mat right away. It protects your cube when it falls, and the timer stands on it more steadily.
