Cube-shaped NxN puzzles are the foundation of speedcubing and the largest group of products in our shop. In the classic cubes category you will find models from 2x2x2, through every size in between, all the way to the cubes in the 14x14–21x21 subcategory. Here you will find cubes from manufacturers such as MoYu, QiYi, GAN, YJ, DaYan, YuXin, ShengShou, MoFangGe and MoFangJiaoShi.
Most of the models in this category are 3x3x3 cubes, and that is where we recommend you start. The most popular methods for solving bigger cubes finish with a 3x3 stage, so once you know how to solve a 3x3x3 cube, you will use that knowledge on every larger size.
Many cube names include the letter M or the word Magnetic. This means there are magnets in the pieces. They gently pull the layers into the right position, so the cube aligns more easily, locks up less often and responds better to your hands during fast solving. Many series come in both versions. MoYu Meilong is a good example: alongside non-magnetic versions such as the Meilong 3C, there is also the Meilong Magnetic. The basic version is enough for learning, while the magnetic one comes in handy once you start timing your solves.
A budget speed cube is all you need to get started, e.g. from the MoYu Meilong, YuXin Little Magic or QiYi Warrior series. More expensive models differ mainly in how refined the mechanism is and in extra features. Some of them have a Ball-Core, i.e. magnets in the core that further stabilize turning. Others have a UV coating, which changes the look and grip of the surface, or spring tension adjustment (tensioning), which lets you set up the cube for more speed or more control. These features are appreciated mainly by people who solve regularly and know what kind of feel they are looking for. If you are just starting out, you don't need them.
Once you have mastered the 3x3, the natural next step is the 4x4x4 and 5x5x5, e.g. the MoYu Meilong 4x4x4, QiYi Warrior 4x4 or QiYi QiZheng S 5x5x5. Cubes up to and including 7x7x7 are official events at WCA competitions. Larger sizes are mainly a challenge for the patient and a treat for collectors. With every extra layer the cube gets bigger and heavier, and a single solve takes longer. If you want to try several sizes at once, the ShengShou Gem set with cubes from 2x2 to 5x5 is a great choice.
When cubes are no longer enough, try other puzzles such as the Megaminx, Pyraminx or Mirror. They require a different way of thinking, but after NxN cubes you will usually master them quickly.
